Tiger Facts

Did you know...?

The largest species of tiger is the Siberian tiger, which can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) long!

Unlike domestic cats, tigers are good swimmers and like the water. Often choosing to take a dip when it gets hot.

A tiger´s stripes are unique and can allow them to be identified by the careful observer.

The female tiger can give birth to a litter of up to 7 cubs every two years. Unfortunately, hunting for so many hungry mouths is too difficult and so usually only two will survive.

White tigers are not albino but white with tan stripes and blue eyes. Albino tigers have pink eyes.

Tigers retract their claws while they are walking to keep them sharp.

Tigers can be found in Asia, India and Russia in climates ranging from hot, tropical jungles to snowy mountains

There are less than 2500 tigers on the planet today - and all 6 species are listed as endangered.

White tigers are now only found in captivity.

The Plight of the Tiger

Tigers are perhaps one of our most love animals and yet we are in danger of losing them forever within the next couple of decades. Tiger populations have suffered largely from the destruction of the natural habitats but also from hunting. Ironically, it´s the tiger´s mysticism and majesty that has made it a target for poachers who hunt them for their skins and other body parts for use in various native and alternative medicines.

The good news is that the plight of the tiger is becoming recognised around the world with government groups acting to ban the trade of tiger parts and medicines and helping to restore their natural habitats. Zoos are also helping through breeding programs and education.
