Rationale

·  Portfolios are a sample learning outcomes.

·  Provide evidence of development over time.

·  Demonstrate the process a student goes through in the production of a piece of work

·  Provide a valid and reliable source of evidence of judgement on student progress and achievement

 

Students involvement in self-evaluation

·  Develop students' ability to set goals

·  Encourage reflective learning

·  Provide students with a feeling of success

 

Purpose of Portfolio

·        To demonstrate the learning process

·        To encourage goal-setting

·        As a means of communicating with parents

·        To demonstrate achievement

·        To develop skills of reflection and self evaluation

 

Questions to assist in designing the portfolio?

·         Process or product or both

·         What outcomes are being achieved?

·         What criteria will be used demonstrate success.?

 

Portfolios can be

·         Working portfolios: ongoing development of learning

·         Documentary portfolios: final products that can be used in summative assessment

·         Show portfolios: communication with parents / employers/ education institutions.

 

What will the portfolio contain?

·         Evidence relevant to the outcomes?

·         Consistent judgements are demonstrated through applications in varied contexts.

 

Who will select the portfolio contents and how?

·         Teacher or student?

·         What guidelines are to be given?

 

How to assess the portfolio evidence?

·         The collection or individual entries

·         Determine criteria

·         Recording information in formats that are easily understood by students and parents.
