End of Learning:  Summative Assessment

Performance / Product

Performance Assessment

Observation, measurement and assessment of performance outcomes of learning according to criteria. Eg

·  Musical performance: ‘Australian Idol’ eg musicality, entertainment.

·  Physical Education performance: technique eg swing, timing…       or measurements eg times, accuracy, percentage of shots:goals…

·  Oral English: eg matter – logical argument , manner - speech, gesture,

Relation to outcomes:  Outcome targets are ‘unpacked’ to see the alignment of the performances with the outcomes to be achieved. Eg ‘students sing in time / pitch’

Product Assessment

Observation, measurement and assessment of product outcomes of learning according to criteria eg

English / Society and Environment

·  Series of drafts and final writing product (including plans, proof-reading)

·  Videotape / Audio tape of a recount / speech / group discussion / debate.

·  Negotiated project: cover page, contents, topic development, conclusion

·        Reading and writing logs.  Journals. Personal spelling lists

Technology and Enterprise

·        Food cooked, wood / metal items produced

·        Electronic products eg graphic design, web pages.

Recording mechanisms

·        Progressive checklist of criteria eg design and production of a wooden model.

·        Specially prepared tables linking achievement with Outcome Statements

·        Observations: Spotlighting (applying agreed criteria - a few targeted aspects)

·        Observation grids.

·        Electronic recording: criteria listed, increasing levels of proficiency shown eg move the coloured dot up the scale.

·        Continuum of performance with annoted descriptors. Place each student.

Designing performance or product assessments

·        Planning Assessments:  Purpose / Outcomes. Processes / Skills / Tasks.

·        Focusing / Recording Observations: Outcomes targetted?  Tool used to record.

·        Judgement according to criteria:  by criteria (Y/N), or rubrics, grade related descriptors, rating proforma, or on a continuum?

·        Evaluation.  Evidence to indicate progress towards an Strands (aspects) / level. Review the performance / product against the intended outcomes.

Assessment Information could be recorded using:

Descriptive and evaluative comments based on the criteria. Symbols. Point on a continuum. Annotations on work, Observation schedules,  Checklists,  Self assessment/peer assessment proformas, Audio/video recordings, Photos,  Journals/logs, Portfolios,  Marks book.

This information provides verification of the judgements by the teacher and evidence of progress by the student towards identified outcomes.
