Agree/Disagree Chart (ADC)

Description
Agree/Disagree is an exercise to
help students organize information to support a position either for or against
an idea. It is an effective tool to record information and encourages and
promotes effective discussion about a topic. ADC allows students to change position based on evidence collected
if appropriate.
Procedure
1. Ask students to agree or
disagree with a statement and to give reason why. After several responses
both for and against, divide students into those who agree and those who
disagree with the statement/idea. In these groups students must choose the 3
most important reasons for their position and share it with the class.
2. Reseat students. Point out that a reasonable person will listen to
and think about both sides before reaching a decision and that they might even
change when confronted with certain data. Use the overhead to list the
statements made for and against. Discuss each statement and record the numbers
who agree/disagree with each
statement.
3. Students then research and discuss the topic in more depth. When
finished, record on the overhead the numbers of students who now agree/disagree with the original
statements. Discuss any differences with the class. This could in small groups,
assigning roles as a recorder, a reader
and a checker/encourager.
