Description

Force Field Analysis is an activity that allows students to explore forces that impact positively and negatively on a given situation. After, these forces are evaluated in terms of their importance by a class vote.

Procedure

1. On paper, list six forces that impact positively on a situation.

2. After, list six forces that impact negatively on the situation.

3. The teacher then elicits one positive factor form each students using the following rules.

Rule 1                        Do not evaluate the ideas.

Rule 2            Only the leader/teacher may interact with the student suggesting an idea, and only to clarify the meaning of the student’s idea.

Rule 3            A recorder lists the ideas on display. Continue the process until no new ideas are proposed or each student has suggested an equal number of ideas.

4. Repeat the process for the negative forces.

5. Students then evaluate the significance of these positive and negative forces by voting on the two most potent positive and negative forces. Tabulate the votes and list the positive and negative forces in order of importance.

6. In groups of three, students identify 3 ways in which the key negative force may be overcome. List and share solutions.

Link to Outcomes

Students visualise consequences, think laterally, recognise opportunity and potential and are prepared to test options.
