Gallery Walk (GW)

Description
Gallery
Walk is a procedure which helps commit ideas to long term memory. After
selecting a concept/issue about a particular topic, students consider the Implications and Applications for the concept/issue. Students then rotate and move
around the class, examining other concepts/issues and suggesting further Implications and Applications, adding to the existing thoughts and knowledge.
Procedure
Quiet
Reflection
Identify concepts and issues
about the topic under consideration.
List
All Concepts and Issues
Compare concepts and issues
identified. Eliminate duplications and refine the list to manageable numbers.
Form groups. Each group has a chart with a large piece of paper and selects a
concept and issue to brainstorm. For each issue the Implication and the
Applications will be considered.
Implications “Therefore we must consider…”
Give groups about 5 minutes
to consider the implications of their concept/issue. Call time, ask them to
move to next group and consider the implications of the next group’s concept
chart. Each group should consider at least 3 concepts and issues. Discuss
implications raised.
Applications “Therefore we must do…”
For each implication, write
at least two applications and provide an example. Provide time for discussion and movement
between groups.
Review
Review each concept/issue and
the Implications and Applications suggested for each. Discuss
results.
Link to Outcomes
Students use language to
understand, develop and communicate ideas and information and interact with
others. Students participate in creative activity of their own and understand
and engage with the artistic, cultural and intellectual work of others.
